• Is machinima art, cinema, games or a confluence of all of the above? Why? (Be sure to give specific examples and definitions to justify your view)
Each view of machinima displays an array of cinema productions, game influence and the fundamental aesthetics of art. I believe it is a confluence of all 3, though I do believe it leans more towards the game side as opposed to the others. It uses cinema fundamentals for story telling techniques and the aesthetic elements of art to entice the viewer to be engaged in it.
According to machinima.org machinima is virtual environment composed of 3D real-time filmmaking often using the technology of 3D video-games.
• Give two or three examples of how the genre of a game can influence the machinima it can be best used to create.
Game narrative and / or cinema narrative molds and shapes the way the game is displayed for the participant.
What are the three (3) most common narrative techniques used in each machinima production and what do they involve?
Since machinema techniques use the same methods as film the main attributes are: character and genre are the basics of any story creating any type of narrative in the mind of the viewer. Symbolic code/ semiotics play the part of how the viewer sees the piece and how it is understood.
• What specific narrative theories are implored in machinima? Give examples as to how these theories are used to both communicate the story and address a specific audience.
In the machinema’s I saw for this blog, I think that todorov’s equilibrium/ dis-equilibrium and new equilibrium are present just as much as different types of archetypes.
• Looking into the future, what are ways that machinima could be used to address social political, environmental and educational issues? What evidence do you find currently that supports your idea?
Machinema is another way for different artists to express themselves and to express their opinions and / or emotions. It’s another art form for artists to articulate their beliefs to articulate them in a different manner. They can use this method to make a stance and change what needs to be improved, and to direct what needs to be defined.
